The Pawn Page
"Pawns are the soul of chess" - Philidor
pawnOn this page, we will show you many of the necessary principles of pawn play that every chessplayer needs to know if they are to strengthen their game significantly. Without a basic knowledge of pawn play and pawn structure in general, you won't become a strong chessplayer. We hope this page will make an exciting improvement in your game.

This lesson will illustrate an 'economy of force'.
Here we see one pawn versus two pawns on the left or 'queen-side' of the chessboard. It is white's turn to move so he plays b4! This move prevents the b-file pawn from advancing by blocking its movement, and it subjects the a-file pawn to capture if it tries to advance! So, one pawn stops two most effectively. One pawn may also stop 3 pawns if there was a pawn on c7 (or c6) as well! The point to remember about this example is: it is often economical to use a lesser force against a greater force in many positions. Look for these possibilities in all of your games.
